Wi-Fi Hack Update, Technology Gift Ideas

As we approach Thanksgiving and the Holiday Season, I want to let you know how much Ryan, Gica and I appreciate you! You make it possible for us to do the work we love, with people we love to work with. That’s saying a lot. We’re very thankful for you.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Wi-Fi hack vulnerability (KRACK) has been fixed for supported Windows, Apple and Android devices.  As you may recall, there was a significant vulnerability in the security for wireless communication (WPA2)discovered last month. I’m pleased to report that the vulnerability has been patched for most devices-as long as your device has the latest software updates. So when you see an operating system update notice, please make sure to apply it. Certain devices, such as routers you have purchased from the store, security cameras, etc., will require a manual update to be protected.

Holiday Technology Gift Ideas

This Friday and next Monday, are named Black Friday and Cyber Monday, because they are typically days when retailers have tremendous sales. I’ve noticed many retailers already posting their Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales online and in print.

Here are some ideas for you:

Costco.com has great prices on computers and TV’s. I’m amazed at how low computer and TV prices keep going.

The latest and best TV technology is the 4K TV. OLED TVs have the best picture. If you’re a sports or gaming enthusiast, consider buying a TV with a 240 HZ refresh rate. That higher refresh rate allows the screen to redraw more quickly to enhance the fast movement of sporting events and gaming.

Ring doorbells connect to your home WI-Fi and let you know when someone is at your front door-even if they don’t ring the doorbell. You can see them, and even talk to them using an app on your smartphone. Ryan and I have Ring doorbells and we love them. Ring is also selling security cameras and home security systems. They have an interesting offer for recording and storing the footage from their devices.

Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Google Home

These devices do a variety of cool things, like controlling your lights, thermostats, playing music, providing weather, news, traffic, and so much more. We’re only going to see more home automation devices as time goes by.

Improve your Wi-Fi with Access Points

Many of our clients are living with less than acceptable WI-Fi reception. The best fix for this is install wired access points. These devices connect to your home network with Ethernet cables, and transmit a fresh, strong WI-Fi signal. They do not suffer from distance issues, because the signal gets to them over the cable. The only drawback is that you have to run a cable to them. It’s worth doing if you want reliable Wi-Fi signals and your existing equipment doesn’t have the signal strength to reach.

Bluetooth Speakers

I just bought some Bose Bluetooth speakers and I’m blown away by the sound! These speakers connect to my smartphone and let me stream music from my phone. Got them at Costco, where they have several models and brands to choose from.
